Past Program: "Experiential Leap"

ETC and Dakar Foundation partnered to take on 14 full-time college club students--under teacher supervision--from Santa Monica College and LA Missions College to learn Rapid Ideation for pitching content packages for community or corporate events and produce original concept shows over the course of 3 semesters.

1st Semester - Spring 2018

Students had the unique chance to experience the full production process from ideation to delivery as they shadowed lead Teachers and Program Instructors in the operation of production equipment, project management and rapid ideation of content packages. This included two events: Urban Tech Connect and AT&T Shape.

Students learned to understand client needs, rapidly ideate creative solutions, produce content deliverables treatments, pitch the treatments, book a production with the event, location scout, pre-production planning, operate camera and audio equipment, manage/handle talent onsite, set up onsite production, capture b-roll and event highlights, edit content to the promised deliverables, revise rough drafts based on client feedback, and submit final product within given timeframe.

2nd semester - fall 2018

Students were divided into preferred roles to execute production tasks to execute a Pitch and Produce content for Digital Hollywood (October). Between planning, they were given the following opportunities to shadow productions at Hart Beat Studios, while also interviewing and producing content for the LA Mission College's program and receiving training at SMC's CMD (Center for Media and Design) Campus Studio. This resulted in the students creating a short documentary sizzle reel for the LA Mission College Program, a news segment for Santa Monica College entitled SMC Highlights, and a comedy show concept called Shenanigans.

Students learned to shadow productions, which included arriving and helping with set, running cables, moving equipment, and taking stock of needs for setting up for a production. They also learned to interview and produce content, write and produce concept shows, and use the Center for Media and Design (CMD) Campus Studio. This included set design, prop making, creating custom motion graphics, script writing, screening/directing actors, directing crew in setup, execution and wrap up on their shows, organizing footage in the post-production process, and editing together the final product.

3rd semester - spring 2019

Students learned to apply their previous experiences to develop a treatment and concept for a TV show, pitched it to AT&T SHAPE and got approval for production. Wherein they applied field production work, which included setting up lighting, cameras, and audio equipment for onsite production to capture content for the concept show. They then scripted, recorded and added custom motion graphics for intros, outros, lower thirds and end credits to produce the final product within the deadlines given to them.
